WHEN IN DOHA: The Five Driving Things To Know

WHEN IN DOHA

The Top Five Driving Things To Know:

1. Because of the speed of development and speed of construction, it is not uncommon to wake up the next day, and have the roads be different than they were the day before.

2. At the stoplights, a yellow light does NOT mean slow down and proceed...it means slam on the breaks, because you need to stop! A flashing green light actually means slow down and proceed.

3. There is only one driving rule; you only need to go the speed limit where there is a speed camera. Stop signs, blinkers, staying in your lane, and driving the speed limit are all optional!!

4. The fewer the numbers on a license plate tag, the more important the owner driving the vehicle is in Qatari society. (We witnessed a vehicle with three numbers on their tag tell a police officer to unblock a road for them, and they did.) We have about seven numbers on our vehicle.

5. In Doha, restaurants do not have drive thru's. Instead you pull up to the restaurant, and you honk your horn for service, until somebody comes out with a menu.

Me at the Souq Waqif festival

My wife and I at the Souq

My wife and a few of her co workers in front of the giant spider sculpture! The art here is amazing!

Giant spider sculpture at the Convention Center near campus.

Downtown Doha! The architecture is amazing here!

It is a massive city! The pictures really cannot capture it all! More to come though.

This is a short video we took while driving.

Beginnings: Our travel endeavors

August 2017 Travel Endeavors

This will be my very first blog on here. I have taken a different direction in life the last few years. What started out as a sports talk blog will shift more towards my wife and I's travel adventures currently in our lives, with a mix of past adventures sprinkled along side some occasional sports talk, because I cant help it; I love all things sports. I want to try and blog and share our experiences on here often. I want to share things that we have been through while pursuing our travel aspirations. Hopefully maybe somebody or multiple people out there can take something away from our experiences. We are all about experiencing life no matter where we find ourselves. We view it all as an adventure, because you just never know when or if you will ever be able to travel again. What started out a year ago as talk and researching, has turned into two people born in the Midwest United States living in Doha, Qatar teaching, working, and traveling. What could be a better home base to live in while looking to travel the world?! Everything is within arms reach here! The possibilities are endless. In my next blog I want to talk about our ventures before and on our way to Qatar, as well as our first few weeks here. We have been through so many unique, fun, and exhausting situations. I really appreciate any out there who decide to read my blog, and maybe return to read more into our lives and adventures. I will be back to share more soon! Take care all, and good luck in all your endeavors.
